Dutch Government Research Finds Paper Invoices use Twice as much Energy than Digital Invoices

Recent research commissioned by the Dutch Government has discovered that paper invoices use nearly two times more energy and 50% more CO2 emissions than digital invoices.

This follows on from several research studies over the last few years which have shown significant benefits to organisations who switch to digital invoicing. For example acording to the Institute of Management and Administration (IOMA), it costs companies with a low level of invoice automation £7 to process each vendor payment. Companies with a high level of automation report reducing this to around £4.20 – a saving of almost 60%.

In addition Zona Research found that most organisations who use digital invoicing recoup their investments within six months.

The Dutch government commissioned this latest study to specifically examine the effect of digital invoicing for the Netherlands and the TNO, the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research Building and Construction Research who conducted the research based their calculation on comparing a supply chain with 100% of paper invoices with a supply chain using 100% of digital invoices.
