Microfilm Conversion - A space-saving, streamling goal!
(Oct 2003)
East Midlands Electricity (Now part of Powergen / e.on) are responsible for over 69,000km of electricity supply infrastructure from the heart of England running to the East coast.
EMEs engineering library was taking up over 300m2 of space at their head office and was becoming disorganised with access taking a lot of staff time. The decision was therefore taken to digitally store all the infrastructure engineering records in digital format and DCS were appointed after an open internet tender excercise.
The challenge was to convert hundreds of thousands of unusual 75 and 105mm microfilms into TIF raster files but with specialist film scanners DCS completed this within a strict 9 month schedule.
East Midland Electricity can now see the benefits which include:
- Easy access to records
- No risk to records from fire or flood
- Infrastructure drawings can be updated by CAD operators
- Files can be accessed from multiple sites
"Once we had decided to undertake the scanning project, we knew we would have our own specific pressures - not least a strict deadline and a large volume of documents. DCS have proven flexible and more than able to work within the demands to achieve our goals."
