Canon uniFLOW platform extended to mobile devices

22/09/2011

Canon, has announced the launch of uniFLOW version 5.1, extending the industry’s first single platform to manage print and scanning processes to support mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Organisations in the UK and Republic of Ireland from 31st October 2011 will now be able to offer staff and visitors the ability to print to their printers and multifunctional devices (MFDs) remotely and using mobile devices in a way that is secure and effectively manages the associated costs.

UniFLOW v5.1 lets users print from any enabled smartphone, tablet or other mobile device remotely print without drivers or a connection to a company’s local network making it ideal for visitors to an organisation or students in a university

The complete corporate print and scan platform allows cost controls and security, even when printing from mobile devices

How uniFLOW Works

Smartphone or tablet users can send jobs to a uniFLOW enabled printer as easily as they can from their normal PC, without needing to download a new application or drivers by simply sending an email.

uniFLOW v5.1 also offers two other ways to send jobs to a printer; via web browser or - for mobile workers using laptops - NT-ware’s internet printer driver.

uniFLOW v5.1 can create a print job from the body text of an email as well as from attachments.  Emailing and submitting jobs via the web doesn’t require any drivers to be installed on a mobile device which is particularly useful for visitors to an organisation or for students, and means there is no IT administration involved in creating new accounts. uniFLOW v5.1 also enables users to automatically download and print documents from systems such as GoogleDocs, SharePoint Online or any FTP site from a link.

What Can uniFLOW Users Expect?

uniFLOW v5.1 ensures users benefit from the same enterprise class security features whether printing from their desktop PC, laptop or mobile device. Print jobs sent from any device can only be accessed using the printer or MFD’s secure access controls (including card authentication or pin code). IT administrators can also restrict the functionality specific users or groups of users can access on a Canon device. They may, for example, prevent certain users such as visitors, part-time employees or consultants from scanning to email.

uniFLOW v5.1 also allows organisations to extend the cost management and measurement features available through the uniFLOW platform to mobile devices.  uniFLOW delivers effective cost management by enabling organisations to measure and track usage, charge back costs, identify waste and misuse, and curb unnecessary expense with printing rules set by IT administrators. For example, rules can be established to ensure that only certain team members can print in colour, or that visitors can only print a set number of documents.

Mobile and remote users can access a range of print finishing settings available on the printer or MFD they are using, without the need for a printer driver for that particular model. This includes double-sided printing, copy count, stapling and hole-punching.
