The Freedom of Information Act 2000
What is the Freedom of Information Act?
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 or Freedom of Information Bill deals with the rights of individuals and organisations to have knowledge and access to any information that is kept relating to themselves.
With regards electronic records management, many parts of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 came into force on January 2005. Many businesses and organisations in the UK are now legally required to ensure their business practices conform to the requirements of the FOI (Freedom of Information) Act.
As a UK company specialising in electronic data management, data processing and file storage, DCS is experienced in dealing with and implementing data management solutions that ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act.
To help explain some of the requirements, timescales and ways of achieving compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, DCS have produced a free whitepaper on the Freedom of Information Act.
The Freedom of Information Act Whitepaper discusses the following in more detail:
- The principles behind the Freedom of Information Act 2000
- Those in the UK affected by the Freedom of Information Act.
- The timescales for complying with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Bill, and the January 2005 deadline.
- Exemptions
- Ways of complying with the Freedom of Information Act.
- Implementing a publication scheme (and defining what is a publication scheme)
- Records management in practice
- A system review.
